Purpose

To help teach knots and lashings in a way that is first and foremost, FUN.

How does it work...

  • Each scout is given a carabiner and a 5' length of white para-cord along with a sign-off card.
  • The scout works his way through 6 levels, with each level being color coded: white, yellow, green, blue, red and black.  Similar to belts in martial arts.
  • As the scout learns a knot, he must tie that knot for a patrol leader or above that is qualified at that level or above.  In other words, if I want to get signed off on the bowline, a yellow level knot, I have to approach a patrol leader or above that has already completed at least the yellow level.
  • When a scout has finished all of the knots for a given level he must go to a Scoutmaster and be spot checked on knots for that level, if the scout completes this, he turns in his current length of line and receives his new color line, this is tied in the Solomon bar knot and worn on the carabiner.
  • The line and carabiner are now considered a part of the scout uniform, we are doing this so that the scouts can tell at a glance who might be able to help them if they are having trouble with a certain knot, and also it ensures (if they all bring it) that during their patrol meetings that there will be rope available to do knot training.
  • With that being said, the rope is to stay on the scout's belt loop unless and only unless the patrol leader is doing knots that night, they need it for the patrol challenge, or they are asked by a leader to do something with it.

The program is also open to all parents, if you wish to learn how to tie knots, we'd be happy to show you the ropes!  :)  (Sorry about that, couldn't resist)
